Bring your car on holiday

Temporary admission is free and needs no paperwork in advance, but the 180 days are strict.

Checked: October 2026

Key facts

  • 180 days per calendar year, in one stay or several. The period cannot be extended.
  • No form to fill in beforehand. Customs officers register the car on board the ferry or at the border and give you a temporary admission slip.
  • Once a car has used its 180 days, it cannot come back that year, even driven by someone else with a power of attorney.
  • Anyone who lives abroad may drive it, with the registration document, the slip and proof of foreign residence. A resident of Morocco may only drive it when you are in the car.
  • Since 2026 a car on a provisional registration can be admitted with a power of attorney from the certificate holder.

Steps

  1. Before leaving, check that your insurance covers Morocco. If not, buy border insurance at the port.
  2. At the border, show your residence permit and the original registration document.
  3. Keep the temporary admission slip in the car for any roadside check.
  4. Take the car out before the last day. You can check your record on douane.gov.ma/at.

What to bring

  • Original registration document
  • Passport, and residence permit or other proof that you live abroad
  • Insurance valid in Morocco
  • Car in someone else's name: power of attorney legalised abroad or at the consulate
  • Rental car: the contract must say the car may go to Morocco

Watch out

  • Lending, selling or leaving the car to a relative who lives in Morocco is a customs offence.
  • Urgent return by plane? While the admission is still valid you may leave the car in a garage of your choice, but nobody may use it and you must take it out yourself before the deadline.
  • You cannot bring a second car until the first has left or been cleared through customs.
  • Seasonal workers must show at least six months of stay abroad.
