What you can bring through customs
Gifts for the family are duty-free up to 25,000 dirhams a year, with a few firm exceptions.
Key facts
- Family gifts: duty-free up to 25,000 dirhams in total, once per calendar year. The whole amount cannot go on one kind of item.
- The allowance is for gifts. Customs has separate tolerances for your own clothes and personal items.
- Not covered by the allowance: mopeds, adult bicycles, furniture, more than one carpet, household appliances new or used, televisions and similar sets. Duty is due on these.
- Forbidden: weapons and ammunition, drugs, counterfeit goods, material contrary to public order, and some plants.
- Need formalities: drones, hunting weapons, pets, and animal or plant products.
- Tax refund when you leave: purchases of 2,000 dirhams or more made the same day in one approved shop. Show the goods, the invoice and the refund slip to customs before boarding.
Steps
- Keep receipts or a rough list of values for the gifts you carry.
- Have your residence permit and proof of work or status abroad ready: they prove your right to the allowance.
- Declare anything outside the allowance and pay the duty. You get a receipt.
What to bring
- Residence permit or other proof of residence abroad
- Work contract, payslip, trader's card or long-stay visa
- Pets: a health certificate from an official vet issued within three days before boarding. A 10 dirham inspection fee is charged per animal
Watch out
- Cannot pay the duty on the spot? Leave the item in customs storage and collect or re-export it within 45 days. After that it is treated as abandoned.
- Quantities that look commercial are taxed as merchandise, whatever their value.
- Keep medicines in their boxes with the prescription.
