The right bank account in Morocco
Three kinds of account exist for Moroccans abroad. The one you pay from decides whether your money can leave again.
Key facts
- Convertible dirham account: fed from abroad in foreign currency, held in dirhams. The balance can be sent back abroad freely.
- Foreign currency account: held in euros, dollars or another currency, also freely transferable.
- Ordinary dirham account: for daily life in Morocco. Money in it cannot be sent abroad freely.
- An investment paid for in foreign currency through the bank keeps a guarantee: the income, the sale price and any gain can be transferred back out.
Steps
- Open a convertible dirham or foreign currency account before any large purchase. Many Moroccan banks open them from their branches in Europe.
- Pay for property, building work or shares from that account, by transfer.
- Ask the bank for the document proving the funds came from abroad, and keep it with the deed.
Watch out
- Buy from an ordinary dirham account, or in cash, and the sale proceeds may stay blocked in Morocco later.
- Keep every transfer slip for as long as you own the asset.
